Nyungwe Chimpanzee Trekking

Chimpanzee trekking in Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park offers a chance to observe chimpanzees in their natural habitat, and though sightings are not guaranteed, the experience is considered a prime wildlife activity. Planning your trek

  • Best time to go: The rainy seasons (March–May and October–November) are often recommended for chimpanzee trekking, as abundant food limits the chimps’ movements, making them easier to track. However, the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer less muddy trails, which can make the hike more comfortable.
  • Permits: A permit is required for the trek. You can book permits through us. Booking several months in advance is recommended, as groups are limited.
  • Age limit: Trekkers must be at least 15 years old to participate in the activity.
  • Group size: Trekking groups are limited to a maximum of eight people per habituated chimpanzee group.

What to expect

  • Morning briefing: Trekkers must report to one of the park’s reception centers—Uwinka, Gisakura, or Kitabi—by 4:30 a.m. for a briefing.
  • The trek: Experienced guides will lead the group, sometimes with trackers going ahead to find the chimpanzees’ location. The hike involves navigating the rugged, dense forest, and trekking duration can vary.
  • Chimpanzee viewing: Once located, you will spend up to one hour observing the chimps. The sighting can be unpredictable, as the chimps are often high in the trees. Binoculars can enhance your viewing experience.
  • Two habituated groups: There are two main habituated chimpanzee groups in Nyungwe for trekking: one in the main Uwinka section of the forest and another in the smaller, separate Cyamudongo Forest.

What to pack

  • Appropriate clothing: Wear long sleeves and trousers to protect yourself from the undergrowth and insects. Sturdy, comfortable hiking boots are essential.
  • Waterproofs: A rain jacket is necessary, as rain can fall at any time.
  • Accessories: Consider packing essentials like insect repellent, garden gloves, a hat, sunglasses, binoculars, and a camera with extra batteries.
  • Porters: Porters are available for hire for a small fee to help carry your gear, which is a great way to support the local community.

Beyond chimpanzee trekking

Other activities in Nyungwe National Park include:
