Rwanda has several museums that detail its history, art, and culture. These are managed by the Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy, which was formed in 2020 by merging the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda and other heritage institutions.

Kigali Genocide Memorial: Located in the capital’s Gisozi district, this is a somber and powerful tribute to the victims of the 1994 genocide. In addition to mass graves, it features exhibits detailing the history of the genocide and the events that led to it.
Kandt House Museum: The former residence of Richard Kandt, a German colonialist and the first resident governor of Rwanda, this Kigali museum details Rwandan life before and during the colonial period. The site also has a reptile exhibit.
Rwanda Art Museum: Located at the former Presidential Palace in Kanombe, this museum showcases contemporary artworks by Rwandan and international artists. The site also includes the wreckage of the presidential jet that was shot down in 1994, which sparked the genocide.
Museum for Campaign Against Genocide: Housed in the Parliamentary building, this museum details the campaign by the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) to stop the 1994 genocide.
Museum Ingabo: This is Rwanda’s first private museum, featuring art and storytelling that explores Rwandan history and culture.
In the Southern Province
Ethnographic Museum (Huye): Formerly known as the National Museum of Rwanda, this is the country’s largest museum and one of the finest in East Africa. Its collection of more than 10,000 artifacts details Rwanda’s history and cultural traditions, from pre-colonial times to the modern era.
King’s Palace Museum (Nyanza): A replica of the royal residence of King Mutara III Rudahigwa, this museum provides insight into the Rwandan monarchical system. Visitors can see the traditional palace, a 1931 modern palace, and the famous long-horned Inyambo cattle.
Kwigira Museum (Nyanza): Located on Rwesero hill in the Nyanza district, this museum explores the history and background of “Home Grown Initiatives”—cultural and historical programs developed to help Rwanda recover from the 1994 genocide.
In the Northern Province
Rwanda Liberation Museum (Gicumbi): This museum documents the struggle for liberation by the RPF. Visitors can see the bunker and trenches used by the liberation forces.
