The lakes: Formed by ancient volcanic activity, the “twin” lakes are separated by a narrow land strip. Lake Burera is larger and cleaner, while Lake Ruhondo is more developed and offers excellent views of the volcano chain.
Ideal for: Nature lovers, photographers, and visitors seeking a relaxing experience in a scenic setting.
Best time to go: All year round but the dry season (June–September & December–February) offers the clearest views and most pleasant hiking conditions. The activity can be done in the morning or afternoon and can easily be combined with Gorilla or Golden Monkey trekking in the Volcano National Park.
Duration: Full day (about 6–8 hours including hike, boat, water and island activities). Can also be arranged as a half-day tour if combined with gorilla trekking or golden monkey trekking.
Terrain: A moderate climb through rolling hills and villages, where you’ll meet friendly locals along the way. At the top, enjoy sweeping views of Lakes Burera and Ruhondo, the surrounding hills, and even distant volcanoes.
