Community Library Initiative

Kibeho Community Library & Cultural Learning Center “IGA : LEARN

I grew up in Kibeho, a rural village with a rich cultural heritage but limited Access to educational resources. As a child, we had no public library, cultural center, or safe space to learn, exchange ideas, or explore our talents. Books were scarce, and most learning happened only within schools, leaving little room for self-discovery, creativity, or exposure to diverse knowledge. Even today, children in Kibeho lack access to books and safe learning spaces.

This gap has contributed to low reading culture, limited critical thinking skills, and fewer opportunities for personal growth among young people. In addition, many young people and women in Kibeho have limited knowledge of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) due to cultural taboos, insufficient information, and scarce youth-friendly health education services. This gap leads to misinformation, early pregnancies, preventable health risks, and restricted life choices for both girls and boys.

This initiative seeks to establish a community library and cultural learning hub integrated with homestay tourism, traditional dance and drumming programs, and health education, creating a safe, inclusive, and resource-rich space for the entire community.

Our Goals

  • Enhance Literacy and Lifelong Learning
  • Provide access to books, digital resources, and creative programs that promote a strong reading culture and continuous learning for children, youth, and adults.
  • Preserve and Promote Cultural Heritage
  • Safeguard and share Rwanda’s traditions, including storytelling, dance, drumming, pottery and crafts while making them accessible to future generations and visitors.
  • Foster Intercultural Exchange and Sustainable Tourism
  • Connect the community with visitors through homestay, cultural experiences, and literacy activities that generate income and promote mutual understanding.
  • Encourage Environmental Awareness and Stewardship
  • Integrate conservation education, tree planting, and sustainable practices into literacy and cultural activities to protect biodiversity and natural resources.
  • Integrate conservation education, tree planting, and sustainable practices into literacy and cultural activities to protect biodiversity and natural resources.

Why Literacy Matters

Literacy is more than just reading and writing:

it’s the key to opportunity. In rural communities, many children lack access to books, libraries, or safe spaces to learn outside of school. Without these tools, their potential is limited. By promoting literacy, we open doors to:

Education & Opportunity: Giving children the foundation for success in school and beyond.

Confidence & Empowerment: Helping youth believe in their abilities and take charge of their future.

Community Growth: Educated communities are stronger, healthier, and more resilient.

Global Connection: Literacy enables cross-cultural exchange and bridges understanding between locals and visitors.

At Bonnie’s Tours, we believe literacy is the first step to empowerment, equality, and sustainable development, a doorway to opportunity, confidence, stronger communities, and global connection.
