Boat trips are scheduled at the following times:

Private boat trips can be organised and are charged at a flat rate for the boat, not per person. These should
be booked at non-scheduled times starting between 10.30am – 1.30pm.

- Game drives: Explore the park in a vehicle to see wildlife. Both day and night game drives are available, with the option to hire a park guide for better animal tracking.
- Boat trips: A boat excursion on Lake Ihema offers unique views of hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife. Trips are scheduled throughout the day, and private trips can also be arranged.
- Behind-the-scenes tour: This tour at the park headquarters provides insight into the park’s management and conservation efforts.
- Fishing: Spend a relaxing day fishing on Lake Shakani, with the option to camp overnight and cook your catch.
- Cultural experiences: Engage with local communities near the park to learn about Rwandan culture, such as cow milking and local food preparation.
- “Walk the Line” tour: Walk along a portion of the park’s fence with a community escort to learn about conservation and park management.

Best time to visit
- The dry season, from June to September, is ideal for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around water sources and the vegetation is thinner.
- A shorter dry spell between mid-December and mid-February is also a good time to visit.
Getting there
- Akagera is located about 110 kilometers (68 miles) east of Kigali, and the drive takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.

Booking and permits
Fees vary based on residency status and age. Overnight visitors pay an entry fee per night, with discounts for longer stays. Day visitors must pay the entry fee for each day they enter. IMPORTANT NOTICE: you have to leave the park by 6 PM. Not even a minute late is allowed without a fine of 60 USD!
