The Dian Fossey hike is a popular activity in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda, that leads to her former research site, the Karisoke Research Center, and her grave. This trek lasting approximately 3-6 hours, requires moderate level of fitness and proper gear like hiking boots, offering visitors a chance to learn about her conservation legacy and the mountain gorillas she studied. The Hike: The trail takes you through the lush forests of Volcanoes National Park to the historic Karisoke Research Center, which she established between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke.
The Destination: At the site, you will find the grounds of her research center and her grave, which is located next to her favorite gorilla, Digit, along with other gorillas who died from poaching.

Duration: The hike can take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours round-trip, depending on the specific trail and rest stops.

Fitness Level: A moderate level of fitness is recommended, as the trail can be steep, muddy, and slippery, especially during the wet season.
Gear: It is advisable to wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good grip, long trousers, long-sleeved shirts, and gloves to protect against sharp branches and insects. A walking stick is often provided to help navigate the terrain.
Timing: Leaving your home/hotel in the morning to get to the visitor centre for registration and for getting your well diserved morning coffee before the hike starts.
